'tis a poor substitute, mainly because it needs some extra clicks and it's not quite as satisfying as casually spinning, zooming in and out and admiring your ship from different angles and positions, catching the light in different ways, as you idly chat, or do something functional in the station.
But the annoyance for me goes even deeper. I remember that back in 2007 when I first joined, not only did you have station spinning, but you also had MUCH MORE VARIETY OF STATION INTERIORS. After Trinity, we were reduced to one "generic" station interior for each race, but before that, there were interiors for different types of station (civilian, military) for each race, all of them cool, interesting and evocative, with different background noise and everything.
Of course they were in the old graphics, and at the time of Trinity I accepted the shave down to generic station types, as I just thought to myself that they'd eventually get around to updating the old, varied station interiors at some point.
But oh no. Not only did they not re-do the old, varied interiors, not only were we reduced to one generic interior per race, but now we're reduced to a ****ing .jpg of a DOOR.
Seriously, is this supposed to be some sort of advancement in immersion, to have a whole variety of stuff reduced to a static .jpg?
What I was looking forward to with WiS was what I'd seen on several demos CCP made, and what CCP had promised - you'd automatically docked in Hangar view, and there was an extra button to go to the Station. What the **** was wrong with that plan? I really want WiS, but I want it to be within the established lore. Debarking to station is not something I'm going to want to do every time I dock.
Really, the current station experience is impoverished in comparison to what it was - impoverished in terms of functionality, and apart from the option of having an avatar and the further promise of interior station action, impoverished in terms of immersion too.
Failed again. There was exactly one type of station environment that that was removed with Trinity and it was the pleasure hub. There were no multiple civilian and military station environments, but I admit it would be cool to have a little more variety. I also don't see any functionality removed. Sure I can use the incarna shiny buttons, but most of the time I still use the old items/ships/fittings buttons.
The removed functionality of the CQ is a myth, even the ship spinning is still there, just take a look from the CQ balcony.
